{"id":151,"date":"2015-11-23T14:43:12","date_gmt":"2015-11-23T14:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.useprecisionag.com\/blog\/?p=151"},"modified":"2015-11-23T14:43:12","modified_gmt":"2015-11-23T14:43:12","slug":"optrx-takes-big-data-360","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.useprecisionag.com\/blog\/optrx-takes-big-data-360\/","title":{"rendered":"OptRx Takes on Big Data and the 360"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.useprecisionag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Agriculture-Big-Data-e1448289401538.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-171 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.useprecisionag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Agriculture-Big-Data-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Agriculture Big Data | Precision Ag Services\" width=\"243\" height=\"243\" \/><\/a>I\u2019ve been in the agriculture business for 35 years, and throughout that time, I\u2019ve always made nitrogen recommendations based on yield potential. With the onslaught of new technology, I\u2019ve discovered that the way I\u2019d made nitrogen recommendations in the past wasn\u2019t the most effective way. To my surprise, for most of those 35 years I\u2019d actually been doing it wrong!<\/p>\n<p>Four years ago, I was hired to conduct\u00a0nitrogen yield trials. Instead of conducting only flat rate trials like everyone else, we let the grower tell us what he wanted to test. Most of what we discovered through these trials was inconclusive, except for one nitrogen application method, the Ag Leader OptRx.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.agleader.com\/products\/directcommand\/optrx-crop-sensors\/\">OptRx<\/a> crop sensors measure real-time infrared data on your crops\u2019 health and apply nitrogen based on your crops\u2019 specific needs. In the years we\u2019ve used OptRx, it\u2019s consistently performed positively each year, even against the drought of 2012 and the monsoons of 2015.<\/p>\n<p>To get a better picture of the results we\u2019ve achieved throughout the years with OptRx, let\u2019s take a look at the per-acre value OptRx added year-over-year on many replicated plots:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2012, OptRX added $12.10\/acre<\/li>\n<li>In 2013, OptRx added $12.75\/acre<\/li>\n<li>In 2014, OptRx added $17.20\/acre<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In 2015, a new challenger entered the field, the 360 Yield Center. The 360 Yield Center applies nitrogen after growth stage V9 when most of the N is required. Sounds like a great idea!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.useprecisionag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/y-drop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-165 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.useprecisionag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/y-drop.jpg\" alt=\"y drop\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a>They engineered a Y-Drop that sells for around $900 per row. While it\u2019s seemingly a great solution, their recommendations are based on sparse data points such as rainfall, soil type or zones.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, the Ag leader OptRx application rate is based on denser data, specifically crop health at the exact time of application.<\/p>\n<p>We conducted a test comparing the Ag Leader OptRx to the 360 Yield Center, and here\u2019s what we found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The 360 Yield Center recommendation yielded 10.95 Bu per # N<\/li>\n<li>OptRx yielded 14.09 Bu per # N<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All fields had 90# N preplant.<\/p>\n<p>So there you have it, OptRx came out on top in our test based on actual data.<\/p>\n<p>Late season application using OptRx is one area that offers high yield potential and cost savings. I worked with one grower who experimented with late season application using plastic hoses to dribble 28% N on the ground. The cost of the hardware was mere pennies per row. While he did burn some corn leaves, the outcome was well worth it (14 replications all positive).<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a look at the results this grower experienced using OptRx:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using 0 additional N, he grossed $790.14\/acre<\/li>\n<li>With the help of OptRx, and 47# additional N, he grossed $838.63 after N cost.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>About 104 # of Nitrogen was applied earlier in the season, along with manure.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>The True Savings of OptRx<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Costs<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The use of OptRx results in major cost-savings and higher gross profits. Based on historical data, we save an average of 30 lbs. of N per acre; For 500 acres of corn, that tallies<br \/>\nup to 26.78 tons of 28% or $9,373. For the State of Michigan, saving 120,000 tons of 28%, or 2,400 truckloads, that would result in a grand total of $42 million in cost-savings!<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Time<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With OptRx, you not only save on costs, but you save your valuable time. The OptRx leads to more acres per fill, reducing application time significantly. Let\u2019s assume it takes 15 minutes to fill a 1000 gallon tank. On 500 acres you\u2019d save 13.39 hours using OptRx, which amounts to a full workday per season! If we take the State of Michigan as an example once again, it would save 13.69 years\u2019 worth of 12-hour days with help from OptRx!<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Lime<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-160 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.useprecisionag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/nitrogen-application.jpg\" alt=\"nitrogen application\" width=\"123\" height=\"187\" \/><\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All nitrogen releases hydrogen that acidifies the soil. Every pound of 28% nitrogen requires 4 lbs. of lime to displace the hydrogen and raise the ph. On a\u00a0500 acre corn field OptRx would save\u00a030 tons of lime per year. Using OptRx, the State of Michigan would\u00a0save 134,400 tons of lime!<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Carbon Footprint<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since we just finished talking about nitrogen and lime savings, think about all of those truckloads of both nitrogen and lime that are unnecessarily shipped each year. Without these shipments, we\u2019ve eliminated the associated fuel, time, and equipment wear. As an added bonus, reducing the consumption of nitrogen may even bring the price down.
